Burgh Island has been one of our most challenging but rewarding catering equipment installations to date. Burgh Island is a beautiful tidal island on the coast of South Devon. There are only a handful of buildings on the whole island, a hotel and a quaint little pub, and some private houses. The unique art deco hotel wanted a whole kitchen refit. With it being a tidal island, we were completely dependent on tide times and sea tractors to get on and off the island. This presented unusual working hours for our engineers and team who kindly accepted the challenge and worked ambitious shift patterns to get the job done. We’d like to thank our sister company GS Catering Equipment Ltd and the GS Engineering team for all the effort to see the project through.
As a part of the design and fit-out, we were required to install some impressive ceiling-hung gantries. With the ceiling being 3.8m high, we had to use scaffolding for our engineers to be able to get up high enough to secure the gantry onto specially-made rails so the position of the gantries can be moved in the future.
As you can see from the photos, the next obstacle was the curved interior wall. As beautiful as it is, it makes equipment fitting perfectly, very challenging. With lots of measuring and designs later, we installed a fantastic curved stainless steel sink unit that completely utilises the space giving the client full function without compromising much-needed floor space.
